Practice for Movement Integration

Feldenkrais Method®

Improving human life
through better movement.

The Feldenkrais Method® is a simple, powerful practice that teaches you how to investigate, improve and take responsibility for the skill in your movement and action.

You’ll learn to restore harmony and cooperation to your muscles and by improving the essential patterns of movement that sustain all healthy action.

Feldenkrais is:

Fun
Effective
Long and healthy life
Deepening understanding of self
Easy
Novel
Kinaesthetic
Recovering lost skill
Adaptable
Interesting
Safe

Feldenkrais participants experience dramatic changes in their bodies, then apply the same principles to learning or to improving any task in life.

Feldenkrais is for a wide variety of adults and children including those with: pain, movement difficulties, developmental difficulties, neurological troubles, neuro/immune dysfunction or for those who wish to improve a skill they can already do very well (such as music, dance, yoga, theatre, or sports)

Where does the name come from?

The Feldenkrais Method® is named after its founder, Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc. (1904-1984).
Dr. Feldenkrais was a well-known physicist, mechanical engineer, and the first Judo black belt in Europe.
He first created the method out of his own need to walk comfortably with a crippling knee injury. He studied the body, how it developed throughout childhood, its makeup, structure and mechanism…everything that helped him understand it. The Method’s true purpose evolved to helping people “become more truly human” (Moshe Feldenkrais).

Who can benefit from Feldenkrais?

  • People of all ages, from babies and children, to adults through to seniors
  • Dancers, musicians, athletes or actors with recurrent injury and pain or simply wishing to improve performance or skills they can already do very well
  • People whose work may involve repetitive tasks
  • People interested in preventing or relieving stiffness, pain or strain
  • People living with movement difficulties which may include stroke, Parkinson’s or developmental delay.
  • Children with Special Needs
  • Anyone seeking to improve their quality of life.

What are the benefits of Feldenkrais?

  • Eliminate aches, pains and discomfort
  • Improve health and well-being
  • Improve flexibility strength, balance and vitality
  • Greater clarity in moving, sensing, thinking and feeling
  • Discover how habitual posture can contribute to pain and limit movement
  • Gain effortless posture
  • Learn new and easier ways to do familiar tasks
  • Breathe more easily
  • Recognise and ease tension
  • Sleep sounder and deeper

The Feldenkrais method® comes in 2 forms.

The hands-on private lesson called Functional Integration® (FI) and the group classes called Awareness Through Movement® (ATM)

Functional Integration® (FI) Session

Functional Integration® (FI) sessions (also called Feldenkrais lessons) are the highly personalised, “hands-on” aspect of the Feldenkrais Method®. Engaging the person and the brain to improve the body’s comfort and function. Each session is a unique, pleasurable experience, designed to address your particular needs and concerns.

Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) Lessons

Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) Lessons are group classes where you will be verbally guided through a planned sequence of movement explorations. Attention is drawn to the process of each movement pattern. Through observing your own movements, you will learn easier ways of moving in everyday activities. Explorations of movement in these classes are designed to improve your overall well-being.

“LOOKING FORWARD TO LEARNING MORE”

Thanks Annemarie. These lessons have been a revelation to me!

When you initially said the focus of the course would be learning how to get up from a chair, I thought to myself that it may not be all that relevant to me.

But I am really delighted by what I have learned and I am looking forward to learning more. Many thanks for your encouraging, gentle and supportive teaching.
